What is pH 5.5?

The Wonders of ph5.5

Skin with a pH of 5.5 is naturally able to repel harmful micro-organisms and negative environmental influences, protecting it from infections, irritation, allergies, and dehydration. An intact acid mantle also functions as a natural deodorant, because it minimises the bacterial breakdown of sweat that causes body odour.

Sebamed skincare products have a pH value of 5.5 and are formulated to restore and cherish your skin’s acid mantle – helping your skin to look its absolute best.

We Answer Your Skincare Questions

Is it ok to use normal soap?

The short answer is ‘no’. Normal soap can damage your skin’s acid mantle – that soapy water is likely to have a pH value of between 8 and 12. Way too high!

Sebamed Cleansing Bar is soap-free – will it really clean my skin?

Soap is only one of many substances which have a cleansing effect. So-called syndets (synthetic detergents) can also dissolve fat or dirt and create foam. Unlike soap, they have the advantage of retaining their cleansing effect in chalky or hard water.

Does Sebamed work for all skin types?

Absolutely. Our products are designed to work with sensitive, dry, mature, oily and combination skins.

How does soap age the skin?

There is a domino effect that happens when you wash your face with a normal soap. You are removing the oil, which leads to loss of moisture. This in turn causes your skin to become thinner and drier. Which leads to fine lines… and fine lines tend to turn into wrinkles.

How does the acid mantle protect my skin?

1) It inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi on the skin whilst encouraging the growth of ‘friendly’ species to replace the bad ones;

2) It provides optimal conditions for enzymes that produce lipids to keep water within the skin and prevents the penetration of irritants, allergens and toxic substances;

3) It provides the acidic environment needed for the regular shedding of skin cells from the surface, thus maintaining your skin’s function and aesthetic integrity.

Why does my skin feel tight and dry after showering?

Loss of fat and moisture, swelling of the skin and an interference of its natural acid protection mantle are unpleasant side effects of frequent showering. A mild soap-free shower cream, which is especially designed to support the skin's pH value of 5.5 will help to maintain protection, provide intensive care and give your skin a fresh, healthy glow.
