What is pH 5.5?
pH values allow us to differentiate acids and bases from each other and label them according to strength. Anything that contains water also has a pH value, which can be determined using an electronic pH meter or an indicator such as a litmus test. The ideal pH level the skin needs to maintain the acid mantle’s functioning is 5.5. pH-neutral products such as “normal” soaps and lotions are therefore not the best products for promoting your skin’s natural functions. They change the skin’s pH value, and even if they are rinsed off straight away, your skin will need several hours to normalize to a pH of 5.5.
What is the acid mantle?
The skin’s natural acid mantle repels pathogens and harmful microorganisms, as well as negative environmental influences. This ensures that the skin’s barrier function is maintained. The optimal pH of the acid mantle is 5.5. Any prolonged deviation from this value will damage the skin and hinder the acid mantle’s functioning. An intact acid mantle also functions as a natural deodorant, because it minimises the bacterial breakdown of sweat which causes body odour.
Why does regular soap damage the skin?
When combined with water, soap forms an alkaline solution with a pH value between 8 and 12. While a pH value of 7 marks the neutral point, the skin’s surface is naturally acidic and has a pH of 5.5. When an alkaline soap is used to wash the skin, it destroys the skin’s acid mantle. Soap makes the skin swell up, which will make your skin feel soft and smooth at first, but the swelling will then encourage the penetration of harmful environmental influences. This will cause the skin to lose more moisture.
How do soap-free cleansing bars cleanse the skin if they don’t contain soap?
Soap is just one of many substances that have a cleansing effect. Synthetic detergents (syndets) are also capable of creating foam and removing dirt from the skin. These syndets don’t lose their ability to cleanse in hard water or form alkaline solutions like soap does. It is therefore possible to make them compatible with the skin’s acid mantle. An additional benefit of soap-free products like the Sebamed Cleansing Bar is that they do not leave behind a residue of any kind when rinsed off.
Do the Sebamed soap-free Cleansing Bar and Sebamed Liquid Face & Body wash have different effects?
No. They are very similar in terms of their cleansing effectiveness, gentleness, skin compatibility, and suitability for sensitive and problematic skin. Whichever product people choose to wash with is simply a matter of personal preference.
How much cleansing product should I use?
Less is more when it comes to foam. A product’s foam quantity has very little to do with the product’s actual cleansing capabilities. In the case of Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash, a pea-sized amount is sufficient for washing your hands and face, which means you can use a 200ml bottle up to 400 times. If you use Sebamed’s soap-free Cleansing Bar, rub it four or five times against your wet hands, flannel, or sponge; you will be able to use the amount that rubs off to wash your hands and face thoroughly.
Why does my skin sometimes tighten and become rough and dry after showering?
Frequent showering can cause several unintended side-effects. Your skin swells up, there is a loss of lipids and moisture, and the skin’s natural acid mantle can get damaged. Mild, soap-free shower products that suit the skin’s natural pH value of 5.5 can provide your skin with intensive care and protection in addition to freshness.
I often have red blotches on my face. Is there anything I can do to help my skin without setting aside hours to follow a care programme?
The short answer is YES! You can use Sebamed Anti-Dry Hydrating Lotion and Sebamed Anti-Dry Intense Night Cream. Apply both products directly after you shower to keep your skin soft, supple, and hydrated. To prevent further damage to your skin, make sure your shower water is no hotter than 35°C.
Should I use different skin cleansing products for my face, hands, and body?
The Sebamed Cleansing Bar and Sebamed Liquid Face & Body Wash were designed specifically for sensitive skin and have been tested accordingly. They can therefore be used on the face, as well as on hands and on the rest of the body.
Do I need a special day and night cream for effective anti-ageing care?
Using a 24-hour cream like Sebamed Anti-Ageing Q10 Protection Cream in the morning and at night is normally sufficient. However, if you have very dry skin, it can be beneficial to use a special night cream in the evening, like Sebamed Anti-Dry Intensive Night Cream.
