Protect your baby’s skin this summer

Baby buns in the sun?

The words “sunkissed” and “baby” are not often found in the same sentence, and for a very good reason – unlike adults, babies have a very delicate skin, containing little melanin (which aids in providing some protection against the summer sun). Humidity and intense temperatures can result in eczema, dry skin, heat rashes and other skin conditions.

Keeping your baby sun-safe this summer is more important than ever before and we bring you some easy tips to keep your baby’s skin protected against  the common skin problems that come with the summer season.

Soak up that sunscreen from 6 months

Babies up to 6 months of age, should be kept out of the sun at all times as their skin is far too delicate and their melanin is still forming. From 6 months and up, use an SPF 50 for baby that protects against UVA/UVB. Make sure your sunscreen is free from toxic Titanium-Oxide but check that your sunscreen does contain Titanium Dioxide which protects the skin against UVA/UVB rays. Keep baby out of the sun between 10AM and 4PM by sticking to shady patches or using a sun shield on your stroller. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply it every 2 hours or more frequently if you take baby to the splash pool.

Load up the love with lotion

Keeping your baby’s skin hydrated amidst the summer heat will help to prevent eczema and skin problems due to dryness. Choose a baby lotion packed with ingredients that contain Vitamin E, Camomile, and Allantoin as this will help soothe irritated skin, redness, and itching caused by higher temperatures.

Beat the bun rash

During summer months, extra sweating is caused by more intense heat which can cause diaper rash flare ups. Avoid using tight diapers, any product containing alcohol or baby powder, should your baby get a diaper rash flare up. Instead, opt for something like Sebamed Baby Gentle Wash which assists in restoring your baby’s moisture balance and prevents dryness with its active ingredient: Allantoin. Once dry use a diaper rash cream loaded with wheat bran extract to create a protective barrier against bacteria formed by urine, stool and moisture.

Choose the right bath time bar

Summer time means more playtime but also a lot of dirt. A good bath will help get rid of dust, sweat and grime from your baby’s body.

Choose a mild baby soap that does not dry out or cause any rashes to your baby’s skin.

Keep’em clean amidst the summer sweat

Always keep a packet of baby wipes handy, especially in the summer months when sweat and dust levels rise. Wipe down dust and sweat to keep your baby’s skin free from harmful pathogens.

By sticking to these simple tricks, your baby will have a skin-loving summer. Looking for products that give your baby’s skin everything it needs for optimum health this summer? Check out: Sebamed Baby
